Sittwe

The Rakhine State capital Sittwe is the gateway to the ancient city of Mrauk Oo, the former centre of a flourishing Rakhine empire. Mrauk Oo reached its peak in the 15^th century and today has a completely different atmosphere to Myanmar’s other ancient sites. It is an interesting alternative site to Bagan. Be one of the first to discover these ancient temples, which are accessible from Sittwe by a picturesque boat ride up the surging Kaladan River. Chine villages, home to women with tattooed faces, can be visited by continuing further up the Lemro river from Mrauk Oo.

In Sitwe's favour are View Point- a lookout at the far edge of the town that is beautiful at sunset - and its fresh seafood, particularly squid and prawn.
